13 December

13 December

Have you put your Christmas tree up yet? If not, perhaps this colourful number by Amy Evans will give you some inspiration…

Why did Amy choose to illustrate the 13th with a tree? ‘Traditionally in my family, we put all the decorations and the tree up on the 13th December, which is 12 days before Christmas. Likewise, we don’t take everything down until the 6th January, which is 12 days afte Christmas. I’m not sure where this tradition comes from (I believe it has been like this on my mum’s side of the family for some time) but it’s all I’ve ever known. So on the 13th, the tree goes up in four stages – morning, it arrives in our living room. Early afternoon belongs to the lights. Late afternoon is all about tinsel and baubles, and finally, in the evening, it all gets switched on. We all have a sneaky chocolate or mince pie as a mini-celebration!’
