Joy-Louise Waterman

Meet 21-year-old illustrator Joy-Louise Waterman.

Joy loves doodling, shopping and discovering new music; she’s also a bit of a gym bunny. ‘I love swimming, plus doing yoga and zumba!’ she says. She also likes experimenting with make-up, ‘random adventures’, the beach and ‘pretty sparkly little things’.

Tell us a bit about yourself…

I’m a couple of months away from beginning my third year at Teesside University, i study BA Hons Graphic Design and I specialise in illustration. I have always loved to doodle. I think my current style has evolved from years of covering my school workbooks in swirly doodles!

I am always experimenting with new styles and mediums: I love using watercolours, pastels, fine liners, Sharpies and any other random materials I have lying around!

What are your inspirations?

I try to find inspiration from every day life. I take photos using my phone when I’m out and about, of anything that inspires me. I also collect images from magazines, leaflets etc and collage them together in a little sketchbook to look back over when I’m feeling uninspired.

What’s your favourite piece of work you produced?

My favourite piece at the minute is called The Continental Drift. I always get a good reaction from people when they see it! It started off as one of those doodles you don’t really think about and you just draw, and then this appeared.

Who is your favourite ‘creative’ in your chosen field?

I don’t really have a favourite at the moment, although I really love the style of work by the likes of Pomme Chan and Johanna Basford.
